How Charming—New Looks in Jewelry for Spring & Summer

March 14th, 2011

circle-necklaces-jewelryNew necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings have made their way to Merra-Lee, Boutique 15, and The Meeting Place, and new styles will be pouring in throughout the rest of spring.  The latest trend is toward more simplistic and pared down looks, but the right jewelry is still an important element in polishing of your look.

Color is an important factor this spring and summer, as well as geometric shapes, particularly circles.    Warmer colors are appearing in metals, such as copper tones, antiqued silver, and tri-colored necklaces and earrings.  We’re also seeing an emphasis on eco-friendly materials such as wood and bone. The Meeting Place has an interesting collection of rings made from replenishable Tagua Nuts.

square-necklaces-jewelryStrands will start to get thinner and more graceful as we move into the summer season. But simple doesn’t have to be bland. Charms and vintage elements are going to be very big in costume jewelry this year, but on thinner chains and spread out more so each charm can be appreciated.  Also, semi-precious gemstones are still popular, like this collection of rings by Anne Koplick.

For bracelets, look for edgy antiqued metal cuffs and leather embellished cuffs, as well as multi-layered bangles.

Where Have Your Naot Shoes Kicked Up Their Heels?

Naot Shoes

Naot Hope: British Museum, London

Naot shoes are literally made for walking, and we want to see where your Naots have walked, hopped, skipped and jumped!  Please e-mail on-location photos of you in your Naot shoes to bev@merralee.com or post directly to our Facebook page.

We all know sore feet can quickly kill the joy of any excursion.  That’s why I specifically sought out Naot shoes for my recent trip to London.  It’s a fabulous city with soooo much to see, and I was not willing to miss any of it—with my wonderful sister as a tour guide and my trusty Naot shoes, I didn’t have to!

Because The Meeting Place is the Midwest headquarters for Naot shoes, I had a HUGE selection of adorable styles to try on.

Spring 2011 – 101: Newest Fashion Trends

January 28th, 2011

Joseph Ribkoff Jacket

If we had to sum up Spring 2011 fashion trends in two words, it would be “anything goes.”  Even the base fabrics can’t make a decision and are a blend of various textures and finishes with colors range from stark white to wild, floral prints.   Pants go anywhere from skin-hugging to wide-legged.  The best news is that there are no rules to what can be worn together.  Pair a tailored jacket with a loose button down shirt and a pair of skinny jeans, wide-leg capris, or a long skirt—your choice!

Hodges Tie Die DressNewest fashion trends in tops for spring 2011:

As mentioned in our first “lesson,” stripes of all widths and color combinations are taking over the market!  They’re in everything from casual to dressy.  In addition to the slub effect mentioned in the previous post, knits are getting lighter and more sheer.  Crinkles are popping up as well as mixed yarns in tees or sweaters. All these trends in fabrics lean toward a more casual feel, which seems to be prevalent this upcoming season.

One shoulder tops and dresses are big on the runways, but we probably won’t be seeing a lot of that trend here in the Midwest—at least not in casual wear, but perhaps in some dressier outfits for special occasions or a night out.

Newest fashion trends in bottoms for Spring 2011:

wider-legLengths in skirts and dresses are getting longer, going from above the knee to tea length.  Also, after several years of low riders, waists are rising!  While skinny jeans and jeggings are still out there,  you’ll also see widening legs. Denise Harshbarger, buyer for Boutique 15, says she expects this trend in wider legs to continue into fall season fashions. So while you don’t want to ditch your skinny jeans just yet, it might be a good time to re-introduce a pair or two of wider-legged pants into the mix.

Karen KaneNewest Trends in Color for Spring 2011:

Dresses are bursting with bright and bold color and prints, especially floral prints.  With military influences being strong this spring and summer, neutrals—whites, olives, khakis—are also big, so anything goes as far as color.  Harshbarger suggests popping these more neutral tones with a splash of coral, pinks, blues, or lime greens.

So now you know what’s up-and-coming in the fashion markets.  In the next post we’ll talk about which trends are sticking around.

Spanx and Wacoal Shapewear

January 27th, 2011

We’ll be shedding our coats and sweaters soon, so now is the time to get shapely for our spring and summer wear — and we’re not talking about going to the gym. We’re talking about stocking up on shapewear and smoother products from Spanx and Wacoal.

Introducing
The Wacoal iPant

Wacoal-ipantThe Wacoal iPant is more than shapewear—it’s hope on a hanger!  It not only provides shapping support, it actually reduces cellulite and smooths your skin.  Seriously.  The Wacoal iPant is constructed of Novarel Slim® nylon microfibers with embedded microcapsules containing caffeine to promote fat destruction, vitamin E to prevent the effects of aging, ceramides to restore and maintain the skin’s smoothness, and retinol and aloe vera to moisturize and increase the firmness of the skin.

For best results, wear the Wacoal iPant 8 hours a day 7 days a week for 28 day. Novarel Slim test results show most women reported improved appearance, a reduction in thigh measurement and that their clothes felt less tight.  Active ingredients are still present in he Wacoal iPant after 100 washes.

Spanx

power-panty-spanxSpanx shapewear is in the magazines and all over Hollywood as the premier under-garment body shaping product. Come in to She She to try out revolutionary Spanx hosiery and power panties that slim and shape target areas—tummy, thighs, hips and rear. Spanx, a patented product by Sarah Blakely, can be worn under even the tightest clothes without any visible panty lines. Most body shapewear products are too thick or stop on the thigh, causing discomfort and leaving bulges on the thigh that can be seen through clothes. Spanx shapewear, made with polyester and a thinner cotton, are unbelievably comfortable and provide the perfect amount of support without those unsightly bulges.

Unique Spanx features:

Waistband: Through the newest technology and a carefully chosen yarn combination, Spanx created a comfortable waistband, without the binding rubber cord that digs into the waist.

Control Top: The Spanx control top extends further than typical control tops to smooth out and support trouble areas.

Gusset: Spanx took a year to develop its cotton gusset, rather than the industry standard of polyester, to offer women a comfortable substitute for underwear.

Leg Bands: Spanx bands are knitted right into the garment, making it all one seamless piece that lies flat and comfortably on the leg.

Update your Fashion Vocabulary!

January 19th, 2011

New styles mean new terms in the fashion world.  Here are some new words you’ll be hearing this spring:

shark-tail

shark-tail-stella

.

Shark tail: Don’t worry, the “mermaid” look isn’t back…yet, anyhow. But we’re still going under the sea this spring with shark tail points accenting the bottoms of tees and other tops.

.

Slouch pockets: Or drape pockets.  Cut to match the laid-back feel of Spring 2011, these over-sized pockets casually drape, or slouch, at the bottom of tops and dresses this season.

slub-crop

Slub knits: a lightweight knit with short horizontal lines of texture running throughout. It has nice stretch and drape, so it’s perfect for tops, T shirts and cardigans.

tresses.

.

Tresses: Tunic + Dress.  These multi-purpose tops or dresses are stronger than ever and work well over slim pants and leggings/jeggings. Jegging (jeans + legging) is another fairly new term, first gaining in widespread use last fall.  Jeggings continue to be a fashion staple this spring.

Marjorie Baer: Handcrafted Jewelry With a Conscience

January 18th, 2011

marjorie-baer-earringsMarjorie Baer’s career as a jewelry designer began on the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in the late 60’s.  It was there that the recent Berkeley grad displayed her first group of handcrafted necklaces, bracelets, and earrings—those artisan pieces laid the groundwork for eighteen years of jewelry collections.

Although her style has evolved with the changing times, it’s always maintained Marjorie’s original design concept.  Each pair of earrings, necklace, ring, and bracelet is a unique, handcrafted artisan piece of jewelry.  Posts are titanium, wires are brass plated with silver and gold, and clips are brass.  Materials used in the jewelry design are: brass, copper, sterling silver, glass, wood and plastic.  All Marjorie Baer jewelry is designed and made in the U.S.A.

“I think my jewelry reflects both my love of art and my training in design.”

“Each piece is made to last and resonate the enduring values that inspire me.”

- Marjorie Baer

Design isn’t all that’s important to Marjorie.  Over the past several years all departments at her company, from jewelry making to packing and shipping to office and catalog,  has evaluated its procedures and applied the principles of Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle:

Reduce: Marjorie Baer Accessories conserves water and uses environmentally friendly cleaning products.  They’ve reduced jewelry packaging materials and use electronic records and communications over paper whenever possible.  The company wastes no metals and uses chemicals sparingly, as well as repair equipment rather than buying new.

Re-use: Marjorie Baer Accessories re-uses cardboard boxes and packing materials as well as paper from faxes and general office use.  The jewelry company uses cloth for cleaning instead of paper.

Recycle: All Marjorie Baer Accessories’ metals are recyclable, and 30 – 40% are recycled. Few chemicals are used and those that are are disposed of according to and monitored by the state and local authorities. The jewelry company recycles paper and plastic and all used computer equipment.  Recycled tissue paper is used for packing jewelry and bio-degradable bags for shipping handcrafted pieces.
